A new study questions the value of vaccines to protect women from a virus that can cause cervical cancer. The vaccines target the human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause genital warts. In some cases, the virus can also causes cervical cancer. The two vaccines, Gardasil, made by Merck, and Cervarix, by GlaxoSmithKline, target two strains of the virus that together cause an estimated 70 percent of cervical cancers.
The vaccines are expensive and researchers are not certain how long the protection from the disease will last. Read the study in “The New England Journal of Medicine”:http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/359/8/821?query=TOC.
